Grinding of the teeth can be caused by several issues, the most prominent of which is stress. As a result, damage can be caused to the jaw, the bone structure of the mouth as well as the teeth.

One of the most common issues arises with the temporomandibular joint, which is responsible for connecting the lower jaw to the skull, therefore allowing the upper and lower jaw to open and close. Individuals with Temporomanidbular Joint Disorder (TMD) can hear clicking sounds when opening and closing their mouths.

Common results of this disorder include headaches, neck aches, and pain in the jaw muscles. More severe cases can cause misaligned joints and dislocated jaws. Arthritis of the jaw joint is also seen in the most severe of TMD.

Some of the treatments for TMD are muscle relaxants, aspirin and an insertion of a plastic device at night time to prevent further grinding of the teeth. In cases of jaw dislocation, jaw surgery may be required.
